It's the standard response to the resignation of Chief Minton, made by everyone from person on the street to Town Council to other cops. The abysmal track record of maintaining a credible police force in a mini-town -- oh how we miss the days of Lloyd Williams and his trusty sidekick Ronnie McIntyre, now running for assessor
(you go Ronnie! ) -- would have some officials questioning whether or what there should be in the way of town police. The current sheriff, that same RM, claims that he could police the town with two additional deputies. Even John Mattison's overwrought math would see that as a tremendous savings over the current bloated town police budget.
The town should examine trading its police to the county and using the money saved to hire a professional -- and possibly even competent -- town manager. Then start peeling off the other services. Trash to Morgan Sanitation. Water to a countywide consolidated water district. Then concentrate on economic development and beautification in town.
