Thanks for putting these contacts at the bottom of this post, I most certainly will send my message....putting a toll on 522 is the most rediculous thing I have heard yet. Can't even IMAGINE the backup it will cause......it will be clear to Winchester.

1. The County Commissioners have NO say in this bill. In fact, the bill was specifically structured so that a road can be designated a toll road solely by action of the Gov and Legislature with no input from local populace or officials.
If someone really wants to impact the discussion, the people to contact are our legislative delegation meaning Daryl Cowles and Craig Blair in the House and Clark Barnes and Walt Helmick in the Senate. Having impact on decisions is more effective when the people who actually make the decisions are the ones addressed. I'd be willing to guess the County Commissionerrs are just as irate as the citizenry on this issue.
2. On the issue itself -- there was a great line in "Charlie Wilson's War" which we just showed at the Star. Charlie Wilson, congressman, says to his political consultant "are you saying I'm stupid?" Consultant replies, "No, you're not stupid, you're just in Congress." Change that to Legislature.
I cannot imagine how one makes a toll road out of a highway that has as many access points (read:driveways) as 522. I can only assume this is aimed at a future 522 or 9 and a way to say: you want this road? Make it a toll road.
It would take a book to go through all the negative impacts of putting tolls on the major thoroughfare of a community. On the other hand, considering that talk of a bypass has been a high priority for the three decades I've been here, and it wasn't new then, I don't expect to see this happen in my lifetime.

Julia,
The Commission will be meeting again Thursday, 13 March to discuss next years budget. I recommend you attend and ask them to "show you the money". I too would love to see how our current commissioners are prioritizing our bdget and spending our tax dollars.
You make a good point about our "personal property tax" on our automobiles and where those dollars are going. Any tax should have a specific and finite purpose.
Other than the views the media has already presented, that is the only way right now to keep toll booths from being created. It will take a lot of voices, signatures and letters to every level of government to ensure it doesn't come to reality.

I don't know how to necessarily stop it, but I WILL say that putting a toll on 522 and/or route 9 will only serve further aggravate the issue. Businesses are suffering; residents are suffering. Gas is at a record high and has anyone seen the price of a gallon of milk these days!????? If I already can't afford to fill the car up with gas, how am I going to pay a toll to get from home to work and back? This is nonsense. What are our taxes going toward?? SHOW ME THE MONEY we are already paying. What am I paying vehicle tax for? Where is that money going?
Are any of the current commissioners going to weigh in on this issue??? Or am I just preaching to the choir?

Consumers and business owners alike are being pressed to the wall with tax and gas increases not to mention the real estate debacle. What can we do to stop this?
