Rusty,
I responded earlier but for some reason it got lost and didn't post so I will try again.
First, I understand where you are coming from. When I was in high school more than 20 years ago we hung out very similar to what you are talking about. As far as education, I was recently informed that the school board has about $2 Million in the bank and if this is the case and they have no plans for it, I would like to see it go towards a Computers for Kids program - such that each incoming Freshman would be given a laptop.
Where I went to school, our libraries were open very late and teachers were always available and could often be seen on campus at 7:00 PM. This is tough today as teachers are burdened by many problems in schools, theya re under funded, under paid, and over worked and for the most part, get little support from the parents or the school. We as a community need to get involved and stay involved.
I am sure the Commissioners haven't done it, but they need to meet with the Student Body President or the President of individual classes and listen to their concerns.
As far as your concerns about the youth not being considered, I suggets you call the County Commissioners office (258-8540) and schedule a meeting to present your concerns and recommendations. If you need help creating a presentation I can help you and I will attend the meeting with you and support you.
Thanks,
John

| As many of you know it is a common argument that education is the key to promoting an advanced, innovative, and purposeful society. If this is indeed so, then why are the youth of our county overlooked in public policy. Not a single hot button issue is education, or the fighting of a prescription drug pandemic that renders the future thinkers of this state and county in a state of comatose. If one were diligent enough one could sit and watch a thousand or more dollars change hands at any local parking lot. I often see hordes of teenagers sitting in their cars at local establishments (this is not to say that all or even most are dealing or doing drugs). The ones that seek clean and harmless commune with each other are often chased away, and time and time again I have seen the quiet and more stealthy drug dealers left alone, while the saddened law abiding youth are asked to leave. I myself am among those who sometimes sit in your local parking lots seeking nothing more than an oppurtunity to visit with those who are close friends. We have been yelled at, told to get a life, searched, and demeaned, just because we are teenagers in a group. Indeed it seems to me that the only thing this county's youth are allowed to organize is a drug deal. I think age discrimination, is prominent and character discrimination is less so. Isn't it about time that the youth of this county are allowed to have a place of their own without your judging eyes and law enforcment assuming we are doing something we aren't?
