I do my grocery shopping at Pitmans in Hancock.   Not only do I not pay tax, but  get an additional 5% discount on Tuesday, Senior Day.  It is a smaller store , but I make do with what they have and they are always friendly.

I agree, and even though I go to Food Lion almost daily for one or two quick items, I usually stop in Hagerstown on my way home form work.  I agree they have no competition, as most every other business in town has little to no competition.

I leave town to shop for groceries when I can -- read: when I have time and extra gas money. The reason? Better prices, better selection, cleaner store, and BETTER QUALITY. Now, I know that there may be a case for the higher prices in a small town (not that I agree), and I might be persuaded to be understanding about a smaller selection, but answer me this ... is there really an excuse for Food Lion continually selling rotten food out of an uncleanly store????

I cannot tell you how many times I have purchased the boxed baby greens (for salad), checked the date, and gotten home and the stuff is totally rotten and decaying in the middle of the bunch. It's also happened on more than one occasion with cheese AND avocados. And ... how many times have you gone over to get some red potatoes, only to find that they are soft and have eyes. What is up with that?

Any idea why the Food Lion in Hedgesville looks like the Buckingham Palace compared to the one here in Berkeley???

Is it this way because they are the only game in town and they don't have to compete? I have lodged numerous complaints to corporate. Have I gotten any kind of response? I'll let you take a guess at the answer.

We live in a rural area, surrounded by family farms. Is there a valid reason for Food Lion not taking advantage of that? I know that Giant stores (not Martins, but Giant Food) sell local produce. Seems like that would drive the cost down, save a little bit in pollution (from trucks not shipping things in from other states), and inrease freshness. Don't get me wrong; I know full well that I can go to any of the local produce stands and get fresh produce directly from the farmers, and I do. BUT, that does not excuse Food Lion from providing produce that is not rotten.

I mean, the bottom line is that just because we are in the country, that doesn't mean we're second class citizens. Our money is just as good as everyone else's. We do not deserve less.

OH, and a side note -- I have shopped in many a Food Lion that has a salad bar. That sure would be a nice healthy alternative to have on hand for a quick lunch or dinner.

Thoughts?

I live on the opposite extreme from you. I live on a road that is halfway between route 9 and River Road. I can honestly say, that I travel to Hagerstown for 90% of my shopping needs. Berkeley Springs can not compete with the stores and prices I can get in Hagerstown for the same items. I also refuse to travel down Route 9. It is also a traffic mess.

I can save money in gas but usually end up spending more on the overall price if I buy groceries or hardware items in town. Add the traffic and shopping for necessities isn't worth it to me in Berkeley Springs.

I love to take my kids to the go carts, mini-golf, driving ranges, bowling alley and to visit monuments and historical sites in town. I do try to support the amusement businesses that are available and do appreciate their willingness to invest here.

I, however, do this when nothing big is going on in town and they can actually enjoy the small town life we live here for.

Here's one.  How many Local folks out there take their money out of town rather than deal with the traffic and congestion of "downtown" Berkeley Springs?

I live off Rock Gap Road.  My house is about 8 miles to Food Lion.  If my wife and I need to go to the store for more than one or two things on the weekend, we will go to the Martin's down on 522.  It is usually just as quick to get to Martin's as it is to get to town on the weekends.

I doubt we are the only family that does.  So, as we are doing our best to cater to the tourists, how many of our Local dollars are going out of town?
